Dave (Dean West) is the proud owner of the monster truck Twister, which
is actually almost entirely controlled by computer, something unheard of
back in the day, with the control system of the truck having been
developed by Dave's wife Sherry (Meredith Orr). Three bumbling hoodlums,
Kelly (David Alan Smith), Bear (R. Richardson Luka) and Dutch (Jay
Gjernes) want to get their hands on the control system, figuring that it
must be worth millions, but somehow mess this totally up and end up
kidnapping Sherry and holding her for ransom. Now Dave is in no mood to
pay up and furthermore has a vague idea who his wife's kidnappers might
be, so he teams up with his monster truck, which he only now finds out can
talk and it quite an unsufferable know-it-all, and they track down Kelly,
Bear and Dutch, and destroy pretty much in their way. But the trio of
baddies still have an ace up their sleeve, a tank to employ against
twister, while Sherry, quite literally, sits on a timebomb ... A
very typical child of its era, lifting key elements from the hit TV show
Knight
Rider and also exploiting the then blossoming popularity of
monster trucks (a spirited combination, actually), while its approach to
action borrows from Sunday morning kids' animated shows, as the film goes
out of its way to show that despite quite some destruction nobody actually
gets hurt, and all of this is then rolled into a goofy comedy. The result
then ... well, I wouldn't say it's a "good" film according to
the traditional meaning of the word, it's slightly vulgar, very shallow,
and its comedy isn't exactly top-notch - but it sure is a lot of fun as it
takes a very loving approach to sheer destruction that in consequence
defies the rather limited budget and gives its receptive audience plenty
of scenes to laugh and be happy about. A silly but fun ride for sure! If
