Above all else, UFOs Do Not Exist is a fascinating collection of
conspiracy theories compiled over the years by UFOlogist Jack Knell, who
has put many UFO-sightings and their gouvernment responses to the probe -
and from Knell's collection alone, you might as well come to the
conclusion that there's a massive cover-up in the works. The best
example is probably the Roswell incident: You don't have to believe in
UFOs to come to the conclusion that the US-American gouvernment is
covering up something - and botching up the job completely. Is that
evidence enough that it was an UFO-incident? According to Jack Knell it
is, and that's where this whole documentary goes wrong: Knell wants to
believe in UFOs so badly, he takes all UFO sightings at face value,
refuses to look for alternative explanations or even listen to them when
they are presented to him. Also, he attributes all quantum leaps in
defense technology to extraterrestrials without ever even acknowledging
the existence of human genius. So far so good though, where the film
completely loses me though is when he links the whole to this day
mysterious Philadelphia Experiment to time travel - without a hint of a
proof and only based on at best wild speculations - and then he links both
Leonardo Da Vinci and writer Jules Verne to his time travel theory, which
are simply put very wild assumptions. To top it off, he links a mural
found in an archeological dig to the Cape Kennedy Space Centre - which
might be fascinating, but the photo of the mural he presents as proof is
totally unintelligable, and Knell never presents us with the corresponding
image from the space centre, which makes this evidence rather poor,
wouldn't you say? In all, the film is probably worth a look as
a bridge between paranoia cinema of the 1950's and the very biased style
of documentary-filmmaking popularized by Michael Moore and the likes, but
it's a safe bet to say it will not make you believe in UFOs or gouvernment
cover-up conspiracies any more than you did before watching the film -
unless of course you want to believe ...
