The titular monster prince is actually Osamu, a small boy who
knows everythihng about monsters. So when Science Patrol flies a giant
monster to Osaka for the world fair, he just has to be there to observe -
only to see Science Patrol lose control over the monster, and giant robot
Ultraman (Bin Furuya) being defeated fighting it. That's not all though,
because when the robot fights the monster, Osamu somehow gets hold of the
rod which actually turns pilot Hayata (Susumu Kurobe) into Ultraman, and
without the rod, no Ultraman ... The monster is a great digger, so it
puts up camp somewhere beneath Osaka, and nobody knows where it will
strike again, so Osaka is evacuated, all but Osamu's family. Then finally,
the monster does strike again, and Science Patrol throws everything it has
at it, but to little avail, they manage nothing more than to cut off the
monster's tail, with the monster not even noticing. Somehow Osamu figures
the rod he found must ahve something to do with Ultraman, so he rushes to
the scene of the attack to return it, and runs right into the arms of
Hayata, who reunited with his rod turns into the giant metalman
immediately, and this time he beats the monster to kingdom come ... The
only two-part story of the original Ultraman-series - and
it's a good thing, too because that means not only a few more twists and
turns than your standard Ultraman-plot, but also (and more
importantly for the series) it means more destruction, especially in the
second episode, which is almost a nonstop monster attack. Of course, all
of this is childish and silly, but isn't that the point of the series?
