Rather suddenly, and without any obvious explanation, a certain lake
becomes incredibly rich with fish - so rich in fact that the Science
Patrol travels there to investigate - and what they find is a mad
scientist who's so obsessed with dinosaurs that he created one of his own,
and of course, his giant dinosaur, Jirass, who's soon enough threatening
the whole neighbourhood. Good thing then that Hayata (Susumu Kurobe),
pilot of the Patrol, is secretly giant robot Ultraman (Bin Furuya), and as
the big mechanic man, he has no problems fighting, defeating and killing
Jirass. This episode is actually significant because it's the
first time Ultraman goes one-on-one with Godzilla
- though due to copyright problems, the monster here is not called that,
and is partly painted yellow and sports a ruff around its neck
(which eventually comes off in a rather gory scene), but the suit the
monster actor wears is quite obviously a leftover from one of the Godzilla-movies Ultraman-producer
Eiji Tsuburaya was working on as special effects wizard. Apart from this
obvious geek appeal, this episode is of course as hokey and campy as you
are by now used fromthe series, and thus good, silly fun.
