Thomas (Anderson Davis) and Kelly (Sara Ball) lead a happy life
together, only somewhat hampered by Kelly's self doubts, as she can't
shake the feeling that he back when only married her because she was
pregnant (but later lost the baby). And then Thomas has an accident that
puts him into a coma for 11 months, and when he comes to again, he has
forgotten the last five years of his life, which includes everything
about Kelly, not only that they were (and are still) married, but even
ever meeting her. At the advice of his psychiatrist (Douglas William
Smith) she's not to throw such things at Thomas right away but let him
easy into them, in the hopes that he gradually regains his memory rather
than be shocked by a new life. Kelly figures this way she can finally get
over her own self doubt and make him fall in love with her all over again
without her being pregnant, and introduces herself as merely a friend of
his sister (Meg Cashel). There's a major stumbling block in her plan
though, the last thing he remembers is wanting to propose to his now ex
Jessica (Luciana Vara), who broke his heart back when, but he manages to
track her down and learns she's single and interested again. So he decides
to take a road trip up the coast to meet her - and Kelly, seeing it's
probably her last chance to make him fall in love with her, hitches a ride
with him on what should be one long and romantic journey - but pretty much
everything that can go wrong on the trip does go wrong, from flat tires to
stolen cars to bears on the camp ground. And despite all of her efforts to
be as close of a girlfriend to Thomas as can be, Kelly is hospitalized for
her peanut allergy while Thomas goes off on a date with Jessica, which
might just be the worst decision of his life ...
Sure, it does help if you like romances as such to enjoy this,
but even if not it's hard to deny that Underneath the Same Moon is
a very sweet movie, especially because it finds the right balance between
drama and comedy, doesn't blindly follow rom-com tropes, and prefers
subtlety over broad jokes or exaggerated dramatics. And a comparatively
believable plot and relatable characters embodied by very likeable actors
really make this one a fine romance.
