While general audiences have gradually warmed up to the horror genre,
religious circles still tend to see horror movies as outright evil - so
who better to host this documentary about horror and spirituality than
Bill Oberst jr, who hasn't only been one of the busiest actor in indie
horror for the last two or so decades, he's also a man of strong faith -
which is not at all a contradiction for him. And as this movie covers the
separate themes of horror as compared to themes in the bible, horror
quickly loses its "evil" sting. Some of the topics covered then
are unstoppable monsters, man made creatures, nature gone wild, killing
for sport, the undead, post apocalypse, man turned monster, either willing
(Jekyll
& Hyde) or unwilling (werewolf), self-righteous revengers
and serial killers, cannibals and vampires, and whatnot, but also the
ability of the genre to make subtle social commentary, tackle big issues
in a symbolic way, and spread hope along with fear. Now naturally, not for
all this topics it's possible to find one-on-one equivalent in the bible,
and to the film's credit it doesn't try to hard to force analogies where
there are none, but in all, the film is very successful in making its
point, and with its utter richness in snippets from pretty much all genre
classics (and quite some non-classics on the side), it's sure to entice
the casual viewer to give horror a chance while it's sure to re-ignite the
love for the genre with horror fans.
