Shamrock (James Ellison) and his near-deaf friend Lucky (Russell
Hayden) are on their way to visit Shamrock's mum, when they first run into
an ambush and save an injured Marshal's (Stanley Price) life. He claims he
has been on the trail of the Cyclone Kid, and to finish his job rather
seamlessly, Shamrock assumes the Marshal's identity. Later, Shamrock runs
into a man (John L.Cason) who claims to be Shamrock - while unbeknowest to
Shamrock he's of course the Cyclone Kid. Cyclone Kid wants to get his
hands on the land of Shamrock's mother, who has died a month or so ago we
now find out. Shamrock wants to contest that in court ... and promptly
gets convicted himself, but Lucky helps him to get away, and they manage
to catch up with Cyclone Kid, Shamrock gives him a good beating ... and
hey, to get the law on their side, Shamrock and Lucky still have the
wounded Marshal up their sleeve, who has remained hidden away for most of
the film. So of course, all ends happily. A B-Western from a
time when B-Westerns had pretty much run their course, so this one is a
bit too obviously made on the dirt-cheap, lacks any good setpieces, and
even the story is recycled from the 1935 Bob Steele-vehicle Alias John
Law. And as for West of the Brazos' stars drawing power: Both
James Ellison and Russell Hayden had been Hopalong
Cassidy's riding partners a decade or so earlier, though never
with one another. This all said, West of the Brazos is certainly
not the worst B-Westerns ever - it's just a totally unmemorable piece of
genre entertainment ...
