Love can be many a thing ... like Nicole (Kate Durocher), who's in love
with her boyfriend Owen (Josh Gilmer), but for him the romance has long
evaporated, and he spends more time on his smart phone than listening to
her - so no wonder Nicole eventually falls for somebody else (Trevor
Sean). Then there's Summer (Jamie Shelnitz) and Calvin (Connor Wilkins),
who met and fell in love on a dating app - but when they meet, he has to
realize she's a woman he ditched rather rudely after a one-night stand.
Sam (Nathan Kohnen) meanwhile can't get over his dead wife (Gabriella
Wisdom), even if he has just met a great woman (Ashley Rose McKenna) who
practically throws herself at him. There's young Theodore (Jack Menzies)
who's just awkward around girls, so when his dream girl Bailey (Ana Ming
Bostwick-Singer) chats him up he almost ruins everything. And then there's
Finn (Kyle Meck), who meets Penelope (Taylor Alexa Frank) in a park, takes
her out on a date, falls in love - and learns she's leaving for London the
very next day and not coming back anytime soon (if ever) ...
What Love Looks Like is a romantic comedy that manages
to even talk to people who are not at all into romantic comedies (and I
count myself as one of them), basically because despite ending all of its
stories on a happy note, it doesn't try to hard to drive the point home
that "love is the answer" and this way gives its stories room to
breathe more naturally. Also the choice to make this an anthology film
(with the stories interwoven though) works really well, as the film stays
interesting by repeatedly shifting focus - especially since even the brand
of humour varies from story to story. And a bunch of relatable characters,
strong performances and a subtle directorial effort that avoids kitsch
really help making this good entertainment that definitely deserves a
watch.
