The Permanent Secretary to the PM Arnold (John Nettleton) has decided
to resign, and he offers Humphrey (Nigel Hawthorne), Permanent Secretary
for the Department of Administrative Affairs, to be his successor - after
Humphrey has offered him all kinds of jobs for his retirement.
Only a short time later, the PM himself resigns as well, and two party
hotheads, Eric (Peter Jeffrey) and Duncan (Philip Stone) are now fighting
for the job ... but Humphrey wants to work with neither of them, and
furthermore if either of them would becopme PM, it would split the party
...
So Humphrey and Arnold discuss the idea of someone else getting the
job, someone without too much imagination or incentive, someone who is
easily persuaded and not very courageous ... someone like Humphrey's old
minister Hacker (Paul Eddington) ... and after having a jolly good laugh,
Humphrey and Arnold have to find out he really is the right man for the
job - for the job as they see it, that is.
Thing is, they have to give him a little profile - and soon make up a
story about EEC (later EU) sausage regulations that would disallow British
sausages to be called sausages - a matter that has long been resolved
behind the curtains, but would still cause some public outrage, and is
perfect for giving Hacker the profile he has so far lacked - even if he in
reality did not do anything ...
And in the end, Humphrey for the first time addresses Hacker as Prime
Minister.
Not so much the last episode of Yes Minister (which
technically, this episode was), but a necessary transition episode to the
new series Yes Prime Minister, which has pretty much the
same cast though.
In all, this is another episode consisting of sharp satire, poignant
dialogue and great acting, not quite as good as the first episodes of Yes
Minister maybe, but still totally watchable and pretty funny.
