When Jim Hacker (Paul Eddington), Minister for Administrative Affairs,
wants to make some cuts in health service & stumbles over St Edward's
Hospital, he thinks he has found just the place to close down - because
you see, St Edward's is fully staffed with everyone but medical personnel,
& has therefore also no patients, which means it has no practical use
at all.
But when Hacker announces he wants to close down the place, his
permanent secretary Humphrey (Nigel Hawthorne) strongly opposes - because
the hospital is run quite so smoothly and patients would only be in the
way. Humphrey even goes so far as to employ a unionist (Stephen Tate) at
the hospital ... just to he can oppose the minister's plans ... & soon
enough, a strike of all non medical hospital personnel in the greater
London area is announced. But on top of that, Hacker has an even bigger
problem, since he suddenly has to find accomodations for a thousand Cuban
refugees ...
But wait a minute, didn't the hospital have a thousand empty beds ?
The idea of administering an empty hospital because it can be run quite
so smoothly, & all the equipment has a longer lifespan without medical
personnel is just priceless, and screenplay and actors also contribute to
make this another episode of great political satire. & what more could
you ask for.
