After years and years of research, mad scientist Dr Frank (Timothy
Kolberg) has found the frequency to raise the living dead ... and stupidly
enough, he transmits the frequency all over town, rendering not only all
radios and cellphones useless but also - well, raising the dead of course.
Unfortunately, being too close to the source, he gets killed and
reanimated - only to be put out of action by his wife's (Danielle
Ackerman) frying pan. Small town cop Sid (Josh Meny) does not really
like his life: Despite his uniform, the locals (especially those who went
to school with him) don't respect him, his dad (Jesse Head) has been a
drunk and an embarrassment ever since his mum has died in a car accident,
and when he finally bumps into Mary (Johanna Ciampa), the girl of his
dreams, and gets to talk to her, almost chat her up even, something bad
happens - something bad like the dead rising from their graves ... which
is when he notices this is about more than just his pathetic little life -
but will he live through it? Ok, so Zombies of the Living
Dead might not break any new ground, storywise, might just play a riff
that has been played before quite a few times - but it does so with plenty
of panache: The film definitely is gruesome in all the right places, so
the die-hard fans will definitely get a kick out of it, but it's also
incredibly light-footed in its approach, moves along at a very swift pace,
doesn't take itself too seriously and fills especially the tearjerker
moments with some kind of irony, and especially (but not only) considering
the low budget the movie was made on, the action and effects look really
first rate. Great genre entertainment, really, that you might also enjoy
if you're not into zombies though.
