Your upcoming movie Finding Waldo - in a few words, what is
it about?
The
eccentric owner of an insurance company stands to lose an incredible
amount of money, unless he can prove in 3 days that a writer for whom he
has written an "anti-writer's block" policy is faking his
inability to write. He sends his mailroom monkey, Chance, an ex-football
player on parole to his company, to prove the author in question, Waldo,
to be a malingerer. Chance and Waldo break out of the mental hospital
where Waldo is being held, and thus begins a frenetic road picture to
rival It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. How did you come on board the
project? As
with all great creative endeavors, alcohol was involved. I had the good
fortune of working with Bo Keister [Bo
Keister interview - click here], on a wonderful comedy-horror concoction called
Cabining, and we ran into each other again at a late night screening of
the film in Hollywood. Over a few libations while waiting for the film to
start, he mentioned a film he was looking forward to doing and thought
there might be a role in it I could be right for. A clink of bottles and
the process began.
So how will you approach your
character? Very, very carefully. Our
screenwriter Blu de Golyer [Blu de
Golyer interview - click here] has created a complex, nuanced and real
character, with enough underlying madness, fear and bravado, that he can
swing from one end of the spectrum to the other, like that daring young
man on the flying trapeze. And believe me Cyrus is definitely working
without a net. He thinks he is controlling Chance, but is someone pushing
Cyrus' buttons? How could you relate to Finding Waldo's
brand of humour? The
most enduring, lasting and heartfelt humor comes out of reality. When you
can recognize a part of yourself in what the characters are doing, how
they are doing it, and the mistakes they make along the way, as an
audience your responses can run the gamut from: how will he ever get out
of this predicament, to he's not really going to try that, to OMG not only
is he doing that but the person he's trying it on is making a very real,
human choice that is throwing the best laid plans of mice and men
completely awry. And so it goes, producing a constant burble of excitement
and amusement, punctuated by moments of trepidation, and guffaws to the
continual enjoyment of all involved.

So what's the schedule ... and any idea when and
where the film might be released onto the general public yet?
As
the funding comes together, I gather we're shooting for a fall start, the
hope being to get the film completed in time for festivals and film
markets. Timing is so important, so that as good as a film is, and this
one will be great, it doesn't get lost in the plethora of product and
everyone will be Finding Waldo. Thanks
for the interview! Finding Waldo is presently in
its fundraising stages, please check out
