Nozomi (Eiko Koike) and Lana (Maho Nonami) are two actresses who share
a posh apartment - but unfortunately they have little in common: While
Lana's outgoing and laid back about everything, Nozomi is a very
by-the-books girl who goes so far as to label her stuff in the fridge. And
while Lana's a bit on the promiscuous side, there's a strong chance
Nozomi's still a virgin. What the both of them is, they have designs on
the same man, and they are after the same film role, which could mean a
breakthrough for either of them. This of course doesn't make their living
arrangement all that easy, as their constant bickering soon turns to
psycho-terror, then slapping each other, destroying one another's things,
and finally things are getting all-out physical - which is not a good idea
in an apartment filled with chainsaws and samurai swords ... Now
2LDK certainly isn't a movie for everybody, as while it starts out
perfectly harmless, things to get out of bounds and the audience is soon
treated to some over-the-top violence one has almost come to expect from
Japanese genre pieces. But if you're up for this kind of thing, you'll
probably enjoy this movie for more than just its violence, as it features
some nice character build-up and character arcs for both leads, and both
actresses turn in stellar performances. Furthermore, however brutal things
might be, they're also peppered with just the right amount of black humour
to save the film from utter bleakness and entertain throughout.
