It's Hollywood, the late 1960's, and Belinda Brimhouse (Jacqueline Guzman Cereceres) has had it with her job as a film editor: Her boss Arrolls (Mystic Marlow) has pretty much promised her heaven, but now all she does is cutting together sex reel after sex reel ... and she's not too happy that Arrolls wants to go hardcore now - so she quits, by way of hitting Arrolls over the head with a beerbottle.

Belinda has this dream to leave the skinflick business for good but make a feature film that still features quite a bit of sex. She has some high expectations for that one, and some definite visions ... but not much of a script, and her best friend Frieda (Jenny Savage) isn't too much of a help, being more into the Hollywood lifestyle (drugs, partying and sex) than actually making a movie.

At first, Belinda tries to actually audition actresses for her movies, but most of them are not too happy with the way the movie's going or not up for giving all up in front of the camera, and when one girl goes further than expected and tries to make out with Belinda, she actually fires her. So soon Belinda frequents strip clubs for talent, and her movie more and more gets like a series of nudie vignettes (which of course also has to do with the fact that she still has no script ready), and soon enough she falls in with the same producer (Art Roberts) she had hoped to have left behind when breaking up with Arrolls.

Problem is, Arrolls now sees Belinda as competition and has put out a contract on her ...

On a pure narrative level, 8 Reels of Sewage might not totally convince, as it falls a few inches short of having an actual story arc - and that said, the film is nothing short of totally charming, at least for people like me who are into late 1960's sexploitation cinema, as it's a lovable collection of little anecdotes from that era, makes many a reference to (to most of us) long forgotten skin flicks, features a copious amount of in-jokes, and tries to recapture the vintage lifestyle of the underbelly of filmmaking. And it's quite fascinating how successful the film is to bring that long bygone era to life, not only considering budgetary ramifications. The actors, the sets, props, costumes all look their part, the musical score has the right feel to it, and even the above-mentioned narrative looseness fits the era.

That said, don't expect too many boobs, there is some nudity in here but not a lot - and that, too, totally fits the mood of the movie. Now you might have to love late 1960's grindhouse cinema to like this movie, but if so you really will!
