Adalynn (Sydney Carvill) has just had a baby, Elisabeth, and while
she's getting a little stressed out over being the perfect mother, her
loving husband Bill (Wade Baker) has to leave for a conference, as his job
pretty much hinges on it. Adalynn insists she'll be ok - but really it's
clear from early on she's not. You see, she has lost a foetus 6 years ago
through no fault of her own, but has never really overcome her grief and
feelings of guilt, something that has triggered her OCD. Now she was on
prescription drugs for that, but had to go off when she got pregnant and
now doesn't want to spoil her mother's milk. So being at home alone,
suffering from OCD and from postpartum depression, while having the
surplus responsibility for the baby soon gets to her, so she's starting to
hear things, see things, hallucinates, has blackouts, and endangers
herself and the baby in the process. And slowly she starts to lose grip of
reality - and that all is even before things get totally derailed ... Now
there's an original concept, postpartum depression done as a horror film.
What's more important though is that the concept actually works here
thanks to a directorial effort that's genre savvy but goes for atmosphere
and suspense over spectacle, and also thanks to a clever screenplay that
has a proper build-up with many twists and turns and a third act that puts
everything on its head. And of course, that Sydne Carvill, who's in almost
every scene of the film, delivers a great performance, doesn't hurt one
bit either to make this really good, well thought through genre fare.
