Prince John is determined to not pay the ransom asked for his brother
Richard who is held hostage in Austria, so Lady Marian (Bernadette
O'Farrell) has secured the assistance of three noblemen (Hugh Latimer,
Charles Stapley, John Dearth) to gather the ransom and the help of Robin
Hood (Richard Greene) to deliver it to the next port to be shipped to
Austria - but one of the noblemen, the Earl of Westmorland (Hugh Atimer),
is a traitor, and he eventually takes off with the ransom to deliver it to
the High Constable (Willoughby Gray), a man loyal to Prince John. Robin
follows Westmorland and witnesses him hiding the chest the ransom's kept
in, but is himself caught by Westmorland, who promptly delivers him to the
High Constable, who has put up camp at a nearby inn. Determined to not let
the High Constabled know where the ransom is hidden, Robin makes
Westmorland fall into his own knife and die, but now the High Constable
wants to torture the chest's whereabout out of Robin ... to no avail of
course, but then he figures to set a trap for Robin's men, who are bound
to come and save him, at the inn, to threaten their lives should Robin not
talk ... which might have worked, too, but the maid at the inn (Helen
Forrest) is actually in league with Robin, and she helps him escape just
in time before his men attack the inn and walk into the Constable's trap
... One of the better episodes of The Adventures of Robin
Hood, this one features just the right amount of action and
plottwists to entertain throughout. Nothing great, mind you, just nice as
far as the series goes.
