Jake (Ed Gonzalez Moreno) is a filmmaker with big aspirations ... but
for the time being is reduced to make corporate videos while his
girlfriend Kris (Natalia Dominguez) is bringing in the real money - not
that she minds all that much, as they seem to be in a healthy relationship
... only in the evenings she's mostly too tired to hear him moaning about
his work. Then, when shooting yet another corporate, he discovers an
anomaly on the video file, and when he enlargens the anomaly he finds it
to be a portal to another dimension. Of course, the first thing he wants
to do is to show the world, but nobody's really interested or thinks he's
a nutjob even, and when he gets Kris to take a look she's quite simply
freaked out. However, he makes his way through to the other dimension, he
finds an alernate Jake having all the success he can only dream of after
having made the film this Jake is still dreaming to do one day. But
instead of this inspiring Jake to just soldier on to match his alternate
self's success, he just tries to partake in the other Jake's riches, like
using his pool when nobody's home or playing his pinball machines. And
eventually, alternate Kris catches him in the pool, but taking him to be
her actual Jake, this leads to them having sex - which causes his Kris to
break up with him when she finds out. Then Jake finds out that alternate
Jake will be on a shoot for three weeks with no ways of communicating with
alternate Kris, so he just crosses over to live the good life with that
Kris under some pretext - and he enjoys it a little too much, so when
alternate Jake returns, he's hell-bent on pushing him into his own
dimension, not for one second thinking about the repercussions ... A
welcomely unusual film, because it takes a rather outlandish concept, but
instead going all spectacle it takes things to a very intimate level, this
way making it relatable to its audience - also because the characters are
carefully fleshed out and their issues, besides the dimension hopping of
course, feel 100% real. And of course, two very solid leads who ground the
thing help in making this very nice if not exactly run-of-the-mill science
fiction entertainment, as does the movie's suitably subtle directorial
effort.
