It's 2001, and the foot-and-mouth disease has hit the UK. That said,
farmer Michael (David Fielder) isn't that worried, especially since he has
taken all the necessary precautions, and the local vet Jeffrey (Nigel
Hastings) has tested his herd quite regularly. All of this isn't enough
though, as eventually the gouvernment orders all cows of the area to be
culled, and of all people Jeffrey leads the slaughter team that's to take
care of Michael's lifestock. He tries to defend his cows the best he can,
even with an (unloaded) gun, as not only is his herd also his livelyhood,
he also has a personal connection to his cows, but ultimately it's to no
avail. A few weeks later, Jeffrey shows up on Michael's farm again, dead
drunk and obviously he's just been in a car accident. Michael's less than
pleased, especially since their last encounter went South, but still he
feels compelled to help the man - and out of this a weird and unexpected
lifelong friendship grows ... An unexpectedly compelling film
about an decidedly odd couple that actually works quite as well because
its script (and I expect the play it's based on) is carefully crafted, it
ties the seemingly randomly picked scenes from the protagonists' life
together rather perfectly and lets the story (that in all spans more than
a decade) unfold rather beautifully. And very well-written, even witty
dialogue of course helps to bring this to life, as do its two strong leads
who manage to create precisely the odd chemistry needed to bring this
story across - and make this a movie that's well worth a watch.
