Alex (Elías
González) finds his car about to be towed away by eager but slightly
clumsy city official Berta (Nerea Barros) for a parking offense. And
however hard he tries, he can't convince her that he just didn't see the
no-parking sign or persuade her to just let it slide. But at least she's
nice enough to offer him a ride to the impounding lot. In the car though
she attacks him which culminates in her sticking a syringe into his neck
and ... when Alex comes to he finds himself handcuffed to a hospital bed,
with Berta leaning over him menacingly. She claims she wants revenge on
him, but it takes him some time to remember who she even is, and even
longer to remember what he has actually done to her. But while he has
pretty much forgotten about it, it had her traumatized ever since - and
now she just wants to make him feel her trauma, if necessary by spilling
blood ...
Berta
is a pretty mean film - but one that has its feminist heart in just the
right place, and a film that has one thinking beyond what's happening on
screen. That said, Berta's by no means a blunt message movie,
direction-wise it's steeped in the tradition of horror and psycho
thriller, with plenty of blood and disturbing images, but interestingly
also its fair share of humour, that actually helps the film's grim theme
rather than undermining it, with an actual punchline towards the end
that's pretty hilarious. And the two leads really manage to carry the film
and play well off one another, only helping to make this a pretty cool and
memorable movie.
