Just like every other year, Steve (Greg James) takes his best friends
Josh (Michael Draper), Mack (Jonny Lee) and Dave (Dan Kyle) on a hunting
trip to a surprise location, and this year it just happens to be a cabin
in the middle of nowhere, with no cellphone reception. So far, this
doesn't seem at all odd to his friends - but what they don't know is that
Steve's marriage to Maggie (Hannah Barefoot) is crumbling, and he has an
idea that his best friends might be involved in this. So he has taken some
precautions to keep them here until he has exacted his revenge, like
sabotaged their car or stolen and destroyed their cellphones - even if
there's no reception, it doesn't hurt to make sure after all. The one
thing he hasn't taken into account though is that nearby - lives a family
of monsters (or at least gravely deformed humans), and they don't really
take it lightly when Steve and company accidently shoot one of their ranks
- so for Steve's friends it's soon a fight for survival against enemies
from within and without ...
Now Between the Trees sure is an unusual genre blend,
combining a rather down-to-earth psycho thriller and a rather
out-of-this-world in one single narrative - but it unexpectedly works like
a charm, as it is narratively light-footed enough to change genres at the
drop of a hat and on top of that really puts its emphasis on tension and
suspense, paired with surprises set at just the right points to be more
than just jump scares. And of course, great locations and a solid cast
totally help bringing this one across as just a really strong genre piece.
