Frank (Johnny Messner) was once the toughest cop of the city - but not
the cleanest mind you. But upon having his son Chance (Chester Rushing),
he moved to the country, to offer him a better life. But of course, the
lure of the city is quick to call Chance once grown up, and once there, he
gets involved with the wrong people, steals some money from big boss Finn
Adair (Steven Seagal), loses the money, and is then killed by Finn's son
Desmond (Zack Ward), a psychopath who has only recently discovered he's
really into killing. When Frank hears about this, he returns to the city
to avenge his son, and for that he turns to his old partner Munce (DMX),
who just happens to investigate the case, but can give him little in term
of clues. And there's a reason for that, because Munce's on Finn's take,
and as disappointed Finn is in his son, and as much as he disapproves of
his actions (and tells him so), he's still Desmond's father. Now Frank
still gets on Desmond's trail, for one because Desmond hasn't been too
good in hiding his tracks, but also because Munce has sold Frank out to
Desmond, and Desmond's attempts to get to Frank are a bit too obvious. So
ultimately an attempt on Frank's life by Desmond and his goons results in
their car being blown up - without them in it though. And now Frank
figures it's a good time to retreat to the country and lure Desmond and
company to him, as he knows his home like the back of his hand and finds
it easy to defend. Only, his ambush doesn't work as well as planned, and
after taking out a few of Desmond's men, he's shot and left for dead - but
his neighbour and friend Swilley (Bill Cobbs) gets him to the hospital in
the city. And Munce, Frank's old partner, is by his bedside in no time.
Only, what Munce knows Finn knows, and what Finn knows Desmond is sure to
find out ... Beyond the Law sure is a very tight revenge
thriller, and one that doesn't take the biblical "an eye for an
eye" moral stance but portrays the world as a dirty and evil place,
where it's eat or be eaten - but that's not to say this is a depressing
film because of that, it's rather a fast paced piece of action cinema,
where you're never far from a beating or a shoot-out, while being carried
by a story that has the necessary stringency while making more sense than
your usual action fare. And a slick directorial effort and strong cast
(with Zack Ward giving a scene-stealing performance) make this one well
worth a watch!
