Actor and comedian is a bit of a living urban legend, as he at times
has the tendency of turning up somewhere where nobody expects him to play
pranks on ordinary people (many being his fanbase), or given unasked-for
advice, or just showing rather eccentric (yet hilarious) behaviour. And
going on social media and reading all the accounts of Murray's antics
(some made up for sure but some authenticated by video footage), one might
come to the conclusion that anyone but oneself has had a "Bill Murray
experience". Enter Sadie Katz, a reasonably successful actress
working mostly in indie movies, who has just been dumped and has hit a
(real or imagined) career low, who kept her head floating reading about
her favourite actor Bill Murray - and after reading all the stories
circling his name, whether real or made up, comes to the conclusion that
the only thing that can lift her up presently is having her own "Bill
Murray experience", a quirky moment involving her and the actor - but
she isn't waiting for fate to come knocking on her door but tries to
actively track down Bill to make it happen ... which soon proves harder
than it is, as Murray's (intentionally and understandably) elusive and
Sadie and Murray don't move in the same circles to begin with. But if
Sadie's one thing, it's persistent, and it doesn't take her long to pick
up a few good leads, one being Bill Murray's brother Joel, another being
P.J. Soles, who, horror fans might know primarily from Halloween
but who also co-starred with Bill Murray in Stripes. Ultimately,
Sadie gets where she wants to be, with Bill Murray pretty much at arm's
length - but she's also wearing a unicorn wig and carries 100 balloons ... This
is actually a charming little documentary, and one that could have gone
wrong in so many ways, like taking the dead serious route or treating the
whole thing as a freakshow. And generally speaking, the subject of a
documentary also being its writer/director isn't a very good idea - but
this movie is the proverbial exception to the rule, as Sadie Katz treats
the whole thing not only with charm but also the right amount of self
irony, as she (not only in hindsight) seems to know what her shenanigans
might look like, so instead of an obsessive chick we get a very likeable
girl who knowingly walks this road as a sort of healing process, and it's
really up to everyone's own interpretation whether she gets redemption in
the end. Rather unusual for sure - and in a good way, well worth a look!
