The Jersey Devil is a monster with (according to some reports at least)
a horse or goat head, hoofs and bat wings that's said to roam the Pine
Barrens of New Jersey. The last wave of supposed sightings occured in the
1980s, but earlier, in 1909, reported appearances of the monster created a
bit of a mass panic, though at least most of these reports have long been
identified as fake news. However, what has since become an urban legend
has its origins centuries earlier in the late 1700s/early 1800s when it
was reported that as her 13th child a woman gave birth to a monster. Over
the centuries however this story has become incredibly muddled, according
to some sources she was a witch, to others her husband was a warlock, or
that she was impregnated by the Devil. All that is fact is that the
woman had existed and had indeed at least 12 children, everything beyond
that is speculation at best ... ... and Seth Breedlove, a
specialist for documentaries about the paranormal, does a great job
bringing the story of the Jersey Devil to life, for one thanks to very
well-crafted re-enactments (including a mock silent film), but also thanks
to well-chosen experts on the subject, including believers and doubters,
historians, folklorists, cryptozoologists and localsthat present the
audience with a very rounded and well-balanced picture of the subject
matter, and the documentary never tries to just drive home a point but to
tell a story and invite the audience to come to their own conclusions,
thus making this a very fascinating movie, no matter where you stand on
the Jersey Devil or whether you've ever before even heard of it.
