The USA during the Civil War era: Union Lieutnant Joe (Don 'Red' Barry)
is sent to California to investigate rumours that the state is actually
attempting to defect to the South. He has soon made out the trio behind
these plans - Carteret (Brian O'Hara), Colton (LeRoy Mason) and gouvernor
Glynn (Edward Keane) - and has figured out their modus operandi -
controling a seminal telegraph station to know about the actions of the
Union and send out fake messages to their enemies - but soon learns that
the three of them are after something bigger: They want to make California
a seperate nation witht he help of France and Mexico. With thew help of a
secret telegraph station of his own and Carteret's own sister (Helen
Talbot), who's a Southener with heart and soul but not a traitor, Joe is
able to thwart the baddies' plans and see that they get their just
desserts. And of course, he himself gets the girl - Carteret's sister, in
case you're wondering - in the end. Rather routine B-Western
that somehow lacks the explosive finale a film of this kind would have
deserved. Still, in all the movie's not too bad. The fact that Don 'Red'
Barry constantly hits his sidekick Wallys Vernon might seem a bit odd
though, as does the fact that his other sidekick (Terry Frost) blows their
cover at the first possible opportunity, yet that is of no consequence to
the further goings-on ...
