Seven man, unknown to one another, fihd themselves locke up with one
another, forced to face their darkest secrets, as they're caught up in a
game where the outcome is to either choose one among their ranks to die or
unravel the mystery behind their abduction - a ruthless game indeed, but
that said, the organisation behind the whole thing, known as the
Collective, might have more on their agenda than just physical and
mental torture ... So ok, the concept of strangers seemingly
randomly thrown together for a round of torture or two has grown by now a
bit long in the tooth. with its most prominent (but by no means first)
example being Saw from some 20 years
prior. But that said, Catalyst is much more than just the
ump-teenth re-telling of the same premise: While starting out on overly
familiar territory it really shows its humanitarian side in the third act,
reverts the good-vs-evil dichotomy and proves to be more character-based
than most movies of its ilk. And the result of all this is pretty cool
genre entertaiment, actually.
