Jennifer (Jessica Lancaster) is an American in Cork, Ireland, living in
a so-so relationship with Marc (Stephen Wyley), a shrewd real estate
developer, and she stays with him mainly because he provides security, has
promised to take care of her mentally unstable brother Matty (Jeremiah
Ocanas) once he's released from the clinic - oh, and because all sorts of
signs have pointed to him being the right one for her, as she believes in
the power of the universe guiding her. Eamon (Owen Dara) is a nurse in the
clinic Matty's at, and over time he has developed a strong relationship
with Matty. And when he meets Jennifer, he's immediately charmed by her -
and she likes him too, lets him take her out, invite her to his appartment
and whatnot ... but nothing actually happens between them, but all the
same she refuses to tell him about Marc for the longest time. And when she
does, it breaks his heart. Thing is, by now she already has realized she
feels drawn much more to Eamon than to Marc - and however much she tries
to neglect it, she eventually ends up in bed with him. But after she
returns home after their sexual encounter, Marc asks her to marry him -
and all the signs the universe seem to give her point to "yes" -
leaving Eamon heartbroken again. Meanwhile, Marc even agrees to let Matty
move in with them after he's released from the clinic, and it seems
everything's falling in Jennifer's favour ... until Matty runs away, and
Jennifer finds out she's pregnant - but not from Marc ... Choosing
Signs is basically a charming little film that sheds an unusual light
on the romance genre, one that's good at blending drama with comedy,
sarcasm with deep feelings in a very non-assuming way. And a very subtle
directorial effort only helps to bring the point across. And add to that
some very likeable or at least relateable characters embodied by a
competent cast, and you've got yourself a pretty good movie.
