4 teen girls with suicidal tendencies suffering from abusive parents,
single-minded boyfriends, anorexia and general hopelessness their life in
a dead end small town offers to them decide to kill a cute young girl -
for no particular reason, just as a vent for their boredom ... True,
even for a less than 20 minute-short, The Columbine Effect doesn't
have much of a story to offer - but that's not the point of the film,
because instead of telling its skeletal plot in a linear matter, filmmaker
Bonéshin captures the mood of the four protaqgonists in short, seemingly
unrelated sequences, and this way pieces together what ultimately leads
(or could have led, the film is intentionally vague about this) to
tragedy. The result is a rather fascinating piece of film that despite
its controversial subject matter doesn't try to pass judgement or even
deliver a message, it's just a piece of atmospheric filmmaking, and
because of that it allows many an inperpretation. Recommended, actually,
but be warned - this is one depressing film!
