Grayson's (Joshua Kaufman) just at that age when he suddenly feels he's
not a boy anymore - and yet everybody treats him like one, especially his
parents (Amy Locane, Gabriel Chytry). So most of the time, he just feels
awkward, and his asthma doesn't help at all there. And without anyone in
his corner, his first date with a girl who wants to try out choking each
other (Chloe Landau) goes really bad. And when his parents find a
fleshlight (= fake rubber pussy) among his things, things really go bad
... Now even if this film might be a bit drastic in its
situations, it still feels like a pretty authentic representation of
puberty, and all the weirdness that comes with it, thanks first and
foremost to a script that really tries to take the perspective of its lead
character without being in the least judgmental, and a directorial effort
that avoids to be in-your-face and carries much of its impact in the
subtext. And of course, believable and relatable performances all arouns
also help making this a pretty strong movie.
