It all starts very innocently with Nic (Dylen Michael Guiry) asking
Raven (Shanel Maida) to be his date for the prom but she refuses, citeing
an unspecified tragedy she still hasn't come over - but soon enough the
two of them are sucked into exactly that tragedy, which seems to be based
on a domestic dispute between Willa (Alina Lapteva) and Samson Loehs
(Dorian Shine) that eventually led to murder ... but who murdered whom,
and how, and was there something paranormal at play? Whatever the answer
to this, Nic and Raven soon find themselves on a trip through all the
aspects of the story, and have to come face to face with their own demons
and fears ... I won't lie, my synopsis falls several feet short
of doing Crucify proper justice, as I feel any synopsis would, as
this is not a film with a linear or even totally comprehensible narrative,
instead it follows the logic of a nightmare and tells its
"story" through an atmosphere of dread, created by clever
camerawork and an ominous soundscape, and plays more on emotions than
logic - and the result of this is nothing short of fascinating, a
beautifully shot and ably acted triplike film that manages to suck you in
from beginning to end and leave you somewhat drained on the other end, but
drained in a good way, like any work of art that's having an emotional
impact on one. That said, this film is probably not for everybody, as it's
somewhat experimental in approach and plays with horror tropes without
properly resolving them (like it would in a linear narrative), but if
you're open-minded and ready to be creeped out, then this one's a
must-see.
