Best friends Michelle (Veronica Ternopolski), Emily (Laurel McArthur),
Jolene (Weronika Sokalska) and Francine (Jalin Desloges) are planning on
going on a camping trip - but then Emily's boyfriend Peter (Dennis
Scullard) refuses to let her go and is taught a humiliating lesson for it
by Michelle ... and ultimately, Emily comes with the girls. However, Peter
is a rather sore loser, so he makes up a plan with his best friends Roy
(Matthew Stefanson) and Jake (Trevor Kristjanson) to scare the girls
shitless - and first it all sounds fun, until Peter talks about actually
killing them, and when Jake protests, Peter slaughters him in cold blood -
and for that alone, Roy agrees to help Peter in whatever he has planned
... and as to what he has planned, let's just say you don't want to be a
camper in that part of the woods, and you especially don't want to camp
with Emily ...
Now I have to be honest, Dark Forest is not a film that
reinvents the slasher formula in any style of form, but it probably hasn't
even set out to ... but it does what it does very well, all the shocks are
set just right, there's plenty of suspense, the leads are all likeable or
at least relatable, and the story really flows well from beginning to end.
And a competent cast of course doesn't hurt either ...
