Four 17 year old girls (Danielle Stavin, Lauren Taler, Skylar Ripp,
D'Lannie Brown) form a punk band, Adore Us, mostly out of
frustration over having no dates for their high school dance, and against
all odds impress small fry manager Mopking (Dave Knapp), who manages to
make them a social media sensation via cleverly enough shot videos that
mask the girls' shortcomings as musicians and songwriters. Soon the
girls are enough of a sensation to attract the attention of manager Sicily
Mane, who operates on a much bigger scale than Mopking, who sees the
girls' potential, and who virtually snatches them from him. The girls
can't believe their luck and totally fail to see Sicily has her own
agenda. Then though the band's lead singer Aspen (D'Lannie Brown) dies in
a freak accident, and Sicily has her replaced by her girlfriend Jezabelle
(Layla Zova) a bit too quickly. The other girls don't like it, but Sicily
makes promise after promise after promise ... until she goes one step too
far when she tries to sell the girls to a record producer (Dawna Lee
Heising), and the producer can't believe she tries to sell her her
talent-free girlfriend Jezabelle yet again with another set-up. She throws
Sicily out and even accuses her of murdering Aspen ... and before long,
the girls of Adore us (apart from Jezabelle) think so too, because there
is some evidence that Aspen got drugged and murdered. And then Aspen comes
back from the dead as a ghost to scare everyone shitless - and settle the
account with Sicily - but things aren't always as simple and straight
forward as they appear to be ... Deadly Punkettes is a
fun film that seems to tell a simple story, yet manages to remain totally
unpredictable through its whole running time, shifting from the basic
story about a young girl band's rise to success to murder mystery and
ghost story and back while treating everything with just the right amount
of irony, a fittingly innocent note of sexiness, and a few really creepy
scenes in justz the right spots. Add to that a competent ensemble cast, a
musical score that carries the sentiment of the film rather beautifully,
and a directotial effort that's laid back enough to fit the requirements
of the story but also atmospheric and tense enough should the situation
require it, and you end up with a very enjoyable movie!
