Mickey (Patch Darragh) and Ray (Michael Rispoli) are two wannabe
screenwriters who have just been told by their would-be producer (Anthony
LoCascio) that their thriller script the've worked on for two years
doesn't feel real enough. So Ray arranges for the both of them to observe
a real life crime scene - which ticks something off in Mickey, as he
figures they have to immerse themselves more in crime (not committing it,
just witnessing) to really feel it. But it's not long before Mickey gets
off the hook, he loses his job, gets addicted to cocaine, and causes for
Ray's laptop with all their scripts on it to be stolen. The two split up
as writing partners, and each tries to finish the script on his own. But
Mickey feels betrayed by this, so at the first occasion, he starts a
relationship with Ray's prostitute friend Chloe (Charlotte Kirk), who Ray
used to shag for relief but also tended to like. She in turn feels somehow
drawn to Mickey, even though she sees how his obsession and his addiction
tear him down. And Mickey really goes off the deep end when he witnesses a
murder, is evicted, and witnesses somebody stealing his notebook all on
the same day ... the Depths is a film that's almost sure
to take you by surprise as keeps one guessing which way it will veer off
in, and while it keeps up the suspense pretty much throughout, it defies
tried and true thriller formulas, opting instead for an at times painful
psychogram of a man who gets into it too deep. This all is of course
thanks to a very cleverly written script, a directorial effort that is
tension-oriented without suffocating the narrative, and of course a very
solid ensemble cast. Well worth a look!
