On his way to a castle where he's invited to take part in a murder
mystery game, Jonas (Kellan Lutz) finds Cathy (Torrey DeVitto), just lying
in the street, who apparently has just escaped the game, dubbed Divertimento,
but asks Jonas to take her back. Once in the castle, Jonas stumbles upon
an actual murder, but what's worse he's considered the killer and is
chased through the place by the castle owner (Götz Otto) and his guests.
But once he has a chance to get a breather, he and Cathy try to figure out
what's going on, and Jonas starts to remember he has once been at the
castle to play chess, with Cathy who has apparently been his wife. Only
that game ended in tragedy ... Now this film starts out as a
somewhat old-fashioned (if in a good way) murder mystery of the old dark
house variety, and a very well done at that, balancing action, suspense
and atmosphere with a sprinkle of mystery in a very stylish way. However,
the longer this film goes, the further it diverts from the formula without
ever betraying its internal logic, but leading to a resolution as
unexpected as they come. And that the film doesn't derail while doing so
is thanks to an assured directorial effort carrying a clever script, and a
very solid cast able to bring their multi-faceted characters to life,
making this movie a joy to watch for sure.
