CD (Mark Agar) and Adele's (Liadh Blake) plan was simple, steal
gangster Brian's (Damien Lumsden) from his safe, head up North and try to
start anew - with enough drugs to last them for a lifetime. But then Brian
walks in on them, Adele hits him over the head with a spanner, and
suddenly they see themselves having to jack a car to get them as far away
as quickly as possible. Now they choose the car of elderly widower Joe -
but thing is, Joe refuses to get out of the car, but agrees to take them
wherever they please. And for some reason he's less afraid of CD, who's
coming off a high and acts all erratic, than he is for his car. As CD,
Adele and Joe ride across country, Joe discovers that Adele is actually a
pretty sensible girl, and he even starts to have fatherly feelings for
her. And she starts to respond to his voice of reason, too, so much so
that he persuades Joe to abandon CD somewhere in the middle of nowhere, so
she, merely 17, can return home to get her life in order. But then Adele
and Joe are tracked down by Brian, and while he lets them go, he's about
to go after CD - and now Adele forces Joe to take her back to CD to save
him. Thing is, Brian is hot on their heels ... Now Don't
Sell Me a Dog is a film that proves how much one can do with only
limited means and even fewer locations (basically the film mostly quite
literally revolves around just one car) if there's an interesting and
engaging script - and in regards to that, the film's actualy quite a bit
twistier than above synopsis might make it sound, including an ending
that's bound to shock. But that said, the film's also held together subtle
yet tense directorial effort, and carried by strong performances by a
small enseble cast, to make this one very nice piece of thriller cinema.
