Matthew (Tommy Nash) and Tyler (Omar Gooding) have been best friends
for life - that is until something has happened when they got drunk
at an abandoned house, and happened upon two young girls trick-or-treating,
something they refuse to talk about. But that was years ago, and now they
and Tyler's hot girlfriend Angela (Naina Michaud), who has designs on
Matthew, and Matthew's overly innocent girlfriend Brittany (Aubrey
Reynolds) all meet up for a good night of drinking - and the next day they
decide to try out a new, as of yet very exclusive escape room, one where
they're supposed to escape a(n of course fake) police station holding
cell. Everybody enjoys it, only Matthew starts to feel uneasy, as it more
and more reminds him of his own past, especially in relation to what
happened in that abandoned house. This is only augmented when on their
escape routes they stumble upon more and more rooms tied to that story.
But what's worse, people start dying for real along the route, convincing
our heroes that there's something definitely wrong with this, and whatever
it is it's buried in Matthew's past ... Now to enjoy this film
it might help to have a basic understanding of the phenomenon and
dramaturgy of escape rooms - but that said, Escape: Puzzle of Fear
does more than just basically copying the structure, but really builds on
it, goes into depth where an escape room stays superficial, and doing so
presents the audience with a big bunch of plot twists and turns that come
across as really surprising, as the film does a great job in only
gradually revealing its backstory - up to the point when the final, very
elaborate reveal is sure to catch everyone off guard. All that is helped
by a direction that keeps the tension on pretty much all the time and
punctuates things with jump scares, and a solid cast that keeps things
grounded, making this one fun genre ride.
