Social media starlet Heather (Revell Carpenter) and her two best
friends Sam (Gigi James) and Riley (Molly Leach) go on a hiking trip for
Heather's channel, not knowing of course that they're followed by a guy in
a wolf mask (Chris Scarciotta), who in their first night in a tent kidnaps
Riley with the intention to kill her live on camera, but he leaves a trail
for the other two that leads to an obvious trap - but Heather and Sam
follow the trail anyways, even manage to free Riley and stop their
wolf-masked foe dead in his track. But he's not one to give up easily, but
Sam proves to be a fighter and ultimately kills him. It's 15 months
later, and Heather has since made their experience into a documentary,
though not without compensating the other girls - but as it is, the
friends have grown increasingly estranged over the months after their
harrowing experience. But then Heather invites Sam and Riley along with
Sam's boyfriend Todd (Jackson Jones) and Riley's girlfriend Leah (Annika
Foster) over to her own boyfriend Gareth's (Michael Bonini) parents'
mansion for a New Year's Eve reunion, replete with barbecue and all. Only
Heather's intentions are not purely selfless, she actually wants to butter
up her friends a bit to give her permission to sell the movie rights for
their story - against compensation of course. Especially Sam is pretty
disgusted by this, and as a result, the party never gets into real swing -
but this is only their smallest problem, as it turns out their killer with
a wolf mask had some friends, who are all also into wolf masks and
killing, and they soon arrive at the location to finish where their
deceased friend has left off ... Of course, at its heart, Followers
is a cross of slasher and home invasion movie, but it goes about this
quite cleverly, as it loads its story with social commentary about insta
fame, and by portraying Heather and the killers as being after basically
the same thing (using very different methods though) it creates an
interesting mirror image and ultimately food for thought. But that all
said, the film also works as a pretty solid thriller, with suspense and
outbursts of violence at all the right places, but basing everything more
on its characters and character constellations to properly invest the
audience. And a pretty strong cast giving down-to-earth relatable
performances helps make this a very cool piece of genre cinema. And
if this review has at all gotten you interested, this movie is available
