A Screambox original. Belfast, the 1990s: Someone in TV-land
has made the awesome decision to for Halloween night enter an actual
alleged haunted house for a live broadcast, with two presenters -
past-his-prime Gerry (Mark Claney) and up-and-coming Michelle (Aimee
Richardson), actual necromancers Sinead (Antoinette Morelli) and Robert
(Dave Fleming), Kyle (Owen James) and his team of high tech
ghosthunters, and even a DJ (Dan Leith) in the attic. So it's a big circus
- all about little Rose (Libby McBride) who has of late taken to
sleepwalking, and her mother Sarah (Siobhan Kelly). who has now and again
seen unexplainable footprints on the kitchen floor. This goes all back to
some urban legend about a man who is said to have desperately tried to get
in touch with his dead daughter, a myth that's evetually debunked mind
you. However, a big circus is made about all of this, and the whole thing
culminates in a séance during which medium Sinead dies. It's at this
point that producer Dave (Andrew Dickson) wants to pull the plug - but the
ratings suggest otherwise, and seeing how off-the-rails the show has gone
so far, there's pretty much no way this won't end in utter chaos ... Sure,
this film has its parallels to other mock live ghosthunting show movies
like Ghostwatch and Late
Night with the Devil, but is different enough from these two
movies to stand utterly on its own, putting its own spin on genre tropes,
moving characters center stage, and putting an emphasis on the horror
elements of its story - and yet, Haunted Ulster Live is not a dead
serious horror flick, there's plenty of irony and satire in this one.
Another great aspect about this movie is how well it reproduces the look
and feel of 1990s TV shows, from the looks of the cast to the whole
build-up of things. - and the acting's pretty much on point as well. So in
all, this is a really cool genre experience for sure.
