After years in the city, clergyman Joe (Jackson Batchelor) and his wife
Lily (Annabella Rich) move to the country to his remote family home - but
after only a day Joe's off for a conference, leaving Lily on her own to
familiarize herself with the house. At first, Lily's ok with this, and she
keeps herself busy transcribing Joe's recorded sermons - only these
sermons soon take a turn to the dark, misogynistic side, and eventually
end in Joe admitting having thought about killing his wife, in quite some
detail. Now that's bad enough, but what's worse is that Lily can't reach
Joe on the phone, and what's yet worse she starts having nightmares about
Joe killing her - and soon doesn't know anymore where the nightmare ends
and reality begins ... Home is Where I Lay is a pretty
effective piece of psycho horror, and one that proves that it doesn't need
a whole lot of spectacle to freak the audience out. Instead the film,
deliberately slowburn in approach, puts its focus on atmosphere, and is
rather beautifully carried by Annabella Rich, who's in almost every shot
and who does a great job conveying her character's mental descent. And of
course, the film's also helped by its main location, which it makes great
use of, portraying it at its eerie best, all of which makes Home is
Where I Lay into a rather impressive genre effort.
