This movie tells no one story but paints a 24-hours tableau of a punk
rock festival, from preparations onwards until the hangover after, from
dozens of different perspectives, including underaged fans lacking fake
IDs to get in, successful and success-less musicians, their managers,
producers, roadies, groupies and lovers, with a focus on the generation of
the musicians themselves, mostly 30-somethings refusing to grow up while
at the same time losing grip on their own youth, and starting to question
whether they're on the right track - but then also whether living a secure
life in the corporate world would be any better than trying to make ends
meet while creating, and/or partying like there's no tomorrow. During the
course of that day, much happens including new love and love lost, goals
fulfilled and dreams shattered, big promises and rude awakenings - and of
course, there's some music, too ... Now if you're a fan of
strictly narrative features, then this one's not for you, as I'll Be
Around is much more based on train of thought than any rigid
structure, with many of the multiple subplots intentionally not leading to
a satisfying conclusion. However, the film does just great in portraying
the collective mindset of its generation, shown in philosophical
discussions, yet even more so in heated arguments, weird ramblings, scenes
of comedy as well as drama, woven together in an associative manner that
only by the by reveals the common denominator of all its stories, holding
them together in a very enjoyable way - if you're up to diving into the
film's slightly experimental journey that is.
