The Amazon jungle: Colonel Whytaker (Brian Dennehy) wants to build a
road right through an Indio village, claiming the Indios' country is
actually his. Right around this time, Daniel (Francesco Quinn), a
half-Indio who has been trained as a Marine - and of course he's the
best - returns from the USA, and when e sees the methods the Colonel
uses to chase the Indios off their land he files a report at the local
police - and is beaten up for his effort since the local police captain is
on the Colonel's payroll. Worse yet, the police also want to clandestinely
kill him, but thanks to his training as a Marine, he manages to make an
escape, and gets back at the Colonel by sabotaging his equipment and
leading the Colonel and his men on a wild goose chase ...
The Colonel is a clever man though, so he hires Captain Jake
'(Marvelous Marvin Hagler), Daniel's drill instructor back in his Marine
days, to help him get rid of Daniel - but once Jake has tracked down
Daniel and the two had a talk, he begins to see the Indios' side of
things, and later he tells the Colonel he just couldn't find Daniel -
which the Colonel does of course not believe and he puts him under house
arrest.
Next the Colonel has the Soft Ball Team, a team of highly
accomplished mercenaries, flown in, but they, too prove to be no match for
Daniel.
It's only when the Colonel takes all of Daniel's tribe hostage that
Daniel gives himself up in exchange for the freedom of his people (whom
the Colonel, a man of his word, even sets free) - but that very same
night, Daniel makes it rain (apparently he can do that) and sets himself
free digging an escape tunnle through the softened ground. Attempts to
recapture him remain futile ...
Soon enough, the Colonel's bosses learn about his failure concerning
building the road and abandon the project - which leaves the Colonel a
broken man with just one goal left in his life, to kill Daniel or die
trying. Eventually, the two men face each other and fight man on man, a
fight that (of course) Daniel wins, but he refuses to kill the Colonel, as
he thinks it is more punishment to live with his defeat than to die - and
to make the Colonel's defeat even more absolute, Daniel blows up his camp
...
As you might have noticed from my synoopsis, this is a thinly disguised
rip-off of First Blood, with that movie's socio-political message
replaced by an ecological one (which is only spelled out in the closing
sequence). In all fairness, the film is nicely crafted and some of the
action is actually pretty good even if the direction seems to be a little
old-fashioned for 1989 ... but on the other hand, the film lacks the
impact of First Blood and just comes across as an
action-by-the-numbers film made predominantly for the shelves of video
rentals, where people expect and even look for action-by-the-numbers
films.
Not really worth your while.
