For years now, young Ingrid (Sabrina Dickens) has been branded a
problem child and moved on from social worker to social worker, from
foster home to foster home, without ever finding her own footing, and it
might be that at least some of the social workers and foster parents have
been part of the problem rather than the solution. It's only now that
sympathetic Ms Murray (Anu Hasan) takes her under her wing that Ingrid
starts to open up, especially when she helps her out of a mess and takes
guardianship of Ingrid. Ingrid soon finds a good friend in Jade (Brigid
Shine), a rather carefree girl who tends to travel around with musicians
and generally enjoys life. Through her, Ingrid learns she has actual
talent as singer/songwriter, and with the help of sympathetic producer
Johnny (John Altman) she nurtures that talent. Eventually, Ingrid travels
to France with Jade, where Angeline (Ruth Millar), a hippie-esque mother
figure to all those who come to live at her estate, takes her under her
wing. And Ingrid even finds love in Dion (Fabien Ara) ... well, almost, as
she's repelled by his mere touch - which is when she starts admitting to
herself what's wrong with her and how to fix it ... Is This
Now is a rather compelling character-based drama that takes its time
to treat its hot button subject with just the right amount of subtlety to
not only give its story but also its lead time to breathe, that doesn't
find its raison d'être in just bombarding its viewers with blow after
blow delivered to its main characters but tells a story of highs and lows
that goes to quite some length at keeping the viewers guessing. And
Sabrina Dickens in the lead gives a likeable and relateable performance
that's sure to capture the movie's audience!
