It's a safe bet to say that most kids of the (late) 1980s still know
the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, which
eventually also spawned a trio of live action movies (not counting the
re-boots of course) - but has anyone ever imagined the troubles Turtles
creators Kevin Eastman (Nick Piacente) and Peter Laird (Chris D'Amato)
went through selling their rather gritty comicbook to TV programmers
(headed by Timothy J. Cox), and what part pizza played in that story?
Well, this movie (probably not really based on facts) does ... Now
of course, the bigger a part the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
cartoon show was of your childhood the more you'll get a kick out of this
one, but even for those only vaguely familiar with the show's premise,
it's a nice satire on how some of the more outlandish shows might be
conceived or pitched or developed or whatever, and how some shows that
make you scratch your head might even have been greenlit. And thanks to an
ironic script and utterly relatable actors, this concept comes across as
very entertainingly, too, without reverting to broad comedy. Enjoyable
for sure.
