Some sort of holocaust has wiped out the entire human race save 3, two men (Antony Carbone &
Robert Towne) & a woman (Betsy Jones-Moreland). Of course the 2 men
soon start fighting over the gal, she being married to Carbone but much
more attracted to the younger & more sensible Towne. First their
clashes are only verbal, but after Betsy Jones-Moreland & Robert
Towne actually got physical (off-screen, this being a movie from 1960),
the men's fight gets physical, too. Carbone forces Towne to leave, but
he can't prevent his wife from leaving with him. Only after a showdown
at the docks in which he kills Towne, he realizes his errors. "I
killed him ! Will we never learn ?" he says, reaching out to his
wife. She grabs his hand & they go off together ...
Filmed in Puerto Rico back-to-back with Creature from the Haunted Sea & Battle of Blood Island, director Corman does
make some great use of the beautiful settings while at the same time
inducing them with a creepy atmosphere (the scenes when the trio passes
through the empty city littered with corpses are particularly creepy).
As for the story, it could have been a great tale about sexual desire,
jealousy & possession, but due to the really stupid ending
does the story fall short of its aims.
Star & screenwriter Towne by the way later wrote the great Chinatown,
the still-pretty-good The Two Jakes, the really-not-that-great Tequila
Sunrise (which he also directed) & the truly-abysmal Mission
Impossible-movies. Thankfully, he gave up acting soon after Last
Woman on Earth. |
