For years, Matt (Doug Waugh) has been a cop in San Francisco, but the
job has taken its toll on him so he has relocated to a small Californian
town to become a park ranger, and today's his first day on the job, which
really ought to entail nothing more than walking the part with veteran
rangers Cletus (Joe D'Auganno) and Mike (Lawrence Waller) and getting to
know the premises and the regulars, like lovely guide Bobbie Jo (Traci
Burr), who does tours through the park every weekend, like today. But
then, serial killer Lyle Wheeler (Ken Brewer) and his equally homicidal
daughter Nancy (Kaitlin Kinner) break out of a not too far mental
institution, get their hands on a bunch of weapons and make it to the park
where they start killing people - and quite naturally, they soon happen
upon with Bobbie Jo's group. When Matt, Cletus and Mike happen upon the
first dead bodies, they notice how ill-equipped they are for a situation
like this - but they make it their mission to catch up and save Bobbie Jo
and company, and are soon joined by off duty (and thus unarmed) detective
Alexis (Linnea Swanson). So in theory, they have strength in number on
their side - but while the group soon starts squabbling among one another
and is in constant danger of breaking up, Lyle and Nancy are as clever as
they're ruthless, and soon bring their unwilling opponents' numbers down
...
It's rather obvious that Like Father, Like Daughter was
made on a modest budget, so it'd be wrong to expect big spectacle or
elevated production value or technical perfection here. But for what it
is, and that's a very basic slasher with comedic undertones, it's actually
pretty good, as it offers some really fun characters - especially the
killer duo on one side, and constantly nagging ranger Matt and detective
Alexis on the other deserve mention -, relatable situations, some really
fun dialogue, and the park itself as a pretty cool backdrop. So if low
budget indie slashers are your thing, you're almost sure to like this one.
