Pro wrestler The Big Deal (Scarlet Moreno) is frustrated as the woman
she was to fight tonight cancelled, and not all that's left for her is to
stand in her boyfriend Little Lucha's (Josh Stifter) corner for support,
but Little Lucha, while an incorrigible optimist, is pretty much a loser
as a wrestler, at best middle of the card cannon fodder - and of course he
loses tonight's fight as well - and still can't stop talking about what a
special evening this was and how great The Big Deal was in his corner when
they have dinner (in their full wrestling costumes) at a diner run by the
hilariously incapable Callie (Meghan Carlson) later on.
And this only augments her frustration, to a point where she's
discouraging to a young fan of hers (Alyce D. Cooper). However, Little
Lucha knows how to lift her spirits - even if it's going to hurt him in
the process quite a bit ... At its core, Little Lucha and
The Big Deal is quite a heartfelt film, one about the frustrations
that come with following one's dream - but not done as drama but as an
hommage to 1980s wrestling with plenty of camp and humour and even gory
bits that go well with the sport, which the filmmakers are quite clearly
fond of. And on camera, Scarlet Moreno and Josh Stifter have just the
right chemistry with one another to make the story work, and their
performances are framed by a solid ensemble cast clearly in on the joke
but mostly playing it straight, which makes this one piece of pretty
wonderful entertainment,
