Captain Hornblower (Sean Simon) finds himself washed ashore on a
fog-filled island, unbable to move or even see very clearly, and while he
vaguely remembers his ship being wrecked on high sea and worries about his
crew, he's confronted by a mysterious figure (Ciaron Davies) letting him
in on some uncomfortable truths about his men being lured astray by pure
greed, truths Captain Hornblower would rather not hear ... A
very interesting blend of pirate movie and fantasy that pretty much takes
the former to a meta level - so gone are ships and battles, but enter
greed as a driving force, greed really for greed's sake, with its object
playing only second fiddle. But while this may sound very brain heavy, the
story is actually told in a very entertaining, sometimes comedic but
sometimes also haunting way, carried by strong central performances and a
directorial effort light-footed enough to keep the audience engaged
throughout.
