Maria (Saorise Stuhr) is a minor vlogging celebrity, usually doing
quirky shows from haunted places, but the last shoot during which she and
her companions Mario (Zachary Chase) and Jake (Joel Hair) disappeared made
her really famous: Originally on the way to a supposedly haunted abandoned
asylum, they eventually got to make a stop at George/Georgina's (Michael
Ciesla) cabin in the middle of nowhere, and George/Georgina is one weird
kind of guy, a totally unconvincing crossdresser, bible-thumper and
Christmas fanatic - but he gives them abode for the night. The next day,
Jake goes out early to get some good shots for their next show - and is
captured and made prisoner by Cesar (Robert Elardo). The same happens to
Mario when he and Maria go out looking for Jake and split up. Then Maria
meets Cesar, who pretends to be the most harmless of man, is revealed to
be George/Georgina's husband, and he tells her about his spouse's terminal
cancer. He also lures Maria back to the house - but we all know, disaster
is going to strike ... Maria's Tale is a quirky and
entertaining little found footage film that tells one of the more
interesting and eccentric stories the genre has to offer, doesn't rely on
genre-immanent techniques too much, and keeps a light-footed approach to
things, one that even allows for bits of humour. And a likeable ensemble
cast of course helps as well to make this movie rather enjoyable.
