British writer Jacky Rom wants her next novel - later titled
From Vegas to Villan to be a crime novel set in Las Vegas, so she
researches everything she needs to know about murder in Las Vegas, and
especially how to get away with it. To this end she talks to tattoo
artists and illusionists, tries herself at archery and gunmanship,
investigates lion shelters as well as the security of one of the best
hotels in town, and she tries to dig a grave in the desert, all to
eventually come up with the "perfect crime" - in writing that is
- and taking us to a fascinating tour through her creative process while
doing so ... A rather unusual documentary, this movie's pretty
much as lightfooted as can be despite its dark theme, thanks primarily to
its central character Jacky Rom, whose approach to the whole subject
matter is refreshingly relaxed and often with a wink in the eye, and who
seems to have the time of her life doing this research. And of course, her
approach to the topic is highly unorthodox and original. And pair that
with a directorial effort that's subtle enough to give Jacky the space she
needs without letting her veer off too far, and you've got a winner,
pretty much!
