Stitches (Jennifer Gentile) is the girl in high school everyone picks
on, basically because she's an introvert, refuses to live up to artificial
beauty standards, and she prefers drawing morbid pictures to activities
girls in her age are expected to like. But she's also good-natured at
heart. But four girls from school
(Kierra Hall, Brianne Braley, Dannika Hughes, Chapin Faverman)
really want to take it out on her, to a point where they hunt her down,
douse her in lighter fluid, and they would have even lighted her if it
wasn't for Roman (Frank Moore), who just happens to live near where the
girls were having their altercation. He chases the quartet of attackers
away and takes poor Stitches in. Having a very visible skin condition, he
understands what Stitches is going through only too well. Stitches opens
up to Roman, too, as he seems the first person who seems to understand
her. Thing is, Roman's also a former serial killer, and he and his friend
and mentor Aldon (Paul Sweeting) want to turn Stitches into one of theirs.
Stitches is shocked and runs away. But she soon has to come to realize
nothing has changed neither at home nor in school, so eventually she
returns to Roman and Aldon - with the intention to become one of theirs
...
Now Misfit certainly can't hide that it has been made
on the very cheap, so some of the technical aspects of the movie are less
than perfect, but it has also been made with a lot of heart and with the
attention to tell an original, even clever story rather than just playing
another riff on the slasher theme. The point here is, the film really
makes you feel with Stitches, makes you see things through her eyes, gives
her character the depth needed - though without condoning her actions to
be sure. Plus the film also has blood and violence in all the right places
to appeal to any genre fan. But mainly it shows that a good script can go
a long way even with limited means ...
