Mad scientist Paul Muller finds out his wife Barbara Steele cheating on him with Rik Battaglia. This is
- Good news since he
wanted to get rid of her anyways, needing her blood for the rejuvination
of his mistress Helga Line.
- Bad news, 'cause she has
left all of her fortune not to him but to her insane cousin, who
presently is at an asylum.
Since this is a horror movie,
Muller kills Steele & Battaglia anyways & gets the insane cousin
(Barbara Steele again, though blond this time) from the sanatorium - to
marry her, drive her over the edge & inherit his wife's fortune
after all. The plan seems to go quite well, even Lawrence Clift, a
doctor from the asylum, soon seems to be convinced that Steele is off
the hook again ... would it not start to spook at the castle quite soon.
& yes, the killed couple comes back as (quite corporeal) spirits to
haunt everyone in sight & pretty soon killing them off one by one
until Clift can destroy their hearts (which are curiously enough kept in
a jar at the castle), thus destroying them, too. Our innocent couple,
Clift & the blond Barbara Steele, survive the ordeal.
A truly wild story, as you
might have guessed from the synopsis, but somehow too much subplots were
incorporated into the script to make this one really work effectively:
There were actually successful movies about jealous husbands haunted by
their dead wives, mad scientists rejuvenating their mistresses by blood
transfusion & husbands wanting to drive their wives insane to
inherit their fortune before this one, so why throw it all together at the risk of losing a few of the loose ends of the stories in the process
(which this movie does) ? |
